Experience:

Dr. Peter Poore spent 6 years in hospital practice in London, 5 years as a Principal in General Practice in Oxfordshire and one year in paediatric research (on vaccine risks) at the Middlesex Hospital, London. Since then, he has 30 years experience of health care delivery in many of the world’s poorest countries.

Between 1973 and 1982, he worked in Ghana, Tanzania, and Papua New Guinea as a paediatrician with responsibility for childcare in government hospitals. He joined Save the Children Fund in 1983 as Health Adviser to the Fund’s global campaign to Stop Polio and the Expanded Programme on Immunisation established by the World Health Organisation. He subsequently became senior health adviser responsible for all aspects of the Fund’s work in the health sector.

He has written and published on health issues and special interests include the quality of primary health care, sustainability of health care delivery systems, health sector reform, refugee health care, reproductive health care, the Expanded Programme on Immunisation, and the impact of HIV/Aids on all aspects of health and social welfare.

He has taught post-graduate and undergraduate students, doctors, nurses and paramedical staff in the UK, Tanzania, Ghana, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Belgium and Mexico.

He has worked as a consultant for a range of development agencies. He was a core member of the Financing Task Force of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, and the alternate NGO representative for northern NGOs on the Board of the Global Fund to fight Aids TB and Malaria. He has served on the Overseas Committee of the British Paediatric Association, and the Council of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

He has recently returned to part time general practice in the NHS UK.

Dr. Poore was awarded OBE in 2001.

Education

Qualified as a doctor at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London in 1964.
