Evidence for Development: Information to Improve Lives

Over $108 billion are invested every year in improving the lives of people in developing countries, yet these investments are often poorly planned, hastily implemented and abandoned without proper scrutiny.
  • Evidence for Development was set up to improve the quality and transparency of information used to design development policies and programmes, and to monitor and evaluate their impact.
  • The focus of Evidence for Development’s work is micro level, household economy assessment and modeling. Evidence for Development has developed field assessment and analytical tools for this purpose, including simple to use software.
  • Evidence for Development’s strategy is to devolve higher-level research and analytical skills to local level. We are currently working with the University of Malawi (Chancellor College) to incorporate household economy assessment in the undergraduate and post graduate economics curriculum
  • This project also includes a collaborative software development project with the department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Chancellor College, to re-program Evidence for Development’s analytical software as an open source product.
  • As well as working with academic partners, Evidence for Development works with smaller NGOs such as Hope and Homes for Children, helping them to measure the economic and social impact of their projects at an individual and household level. The aim is to help extremely vulnerable families affected by HIV/AIDS achieve self reliance through the most appropriate development inputs
  • Finally, we are exploring links with researchers working on poverty and health issues including TB and maternal and child mortality.

The UK Dept of International Development (DfID) and Australian Aid (AusAID) is supporting Evidence for Development’s capacity building work with the University of Malawi

Evidence for Development is generously supported by Covington and Burling through pro bono legal services and by Lee Dicketts and Co through accountancy services.
